Detective LaSalle: Notes on Henry Leroy Lewis
First interview with Henry Leroy Lewis, WM 39, complainant claims he and his family are being stalked and harassed by gang members, due to an altercation that occurred Feb 3, 2021.
According to Mr. Lewis' statement, reports filed and verified by responding officers and court records. On the evening in question Mr. Lewis and his wife Amber had been to a happy hour function for her office. Mrs. Lewis does not drink, Mr. Lewis said he had three or four beverages at the function, then on the way home they stopped for gas and he wanted a six pack to drink a couple more at home, Mrs. Lewis drove. This was confirmed by gas station surveillance footage as well as witness statements.
Mr. Lewis proceeded to fill up their vehicles gas tank at the pump while Mrs. Lewis went inside to use the restroom and grab the beer for Mr. Lewis. After a few minutes had passed and Mrs. Lewis had not emerged Mr. Lewis had proceeded to enter the gas station to look for her.
Upon entering the gas station, he could hear several people yelling and his wife crying. Four men, unknown to Mr. Lewis, had surrounded Mrs. Lewis and were harassing her. Store video and witness statements corroborated.
Two of the men had physically restrained Mrs. Lewis, one behind her with his arm around her waist, the other in front with his hand around her neck. According to her statement and the statement of one Marlene Bond, on duty clerk at the store, the four men had propositioned Mrs. Lewis to leave with them, asking her to share her beer with them and asking if she had ever had sex with four men at once.
She tried to ignore them, when they persisted, she told them her husband was right outside, they threatened to “take her to the bathroom and take turns raping her while he beats on the door and cries.”
This is her directly quoting the men and corroborated by the witness statement. Upon seeing his wife restrained Mr. Lewis attacked, he claims to have little or no recollection of the altercation once it began, surveillance video shows Mr. Lewis punching two of the men a single time and them falling either unconscious or unable to return to their feet.
It is significant to note here that Mr. Lewis is perhaps one of the largest men I have ever personally seen. His drivers license records his height at six feet, eleven inches and weight at three hundred and ten pounds. I would say Mr. Lewis has a very low body fat percentage. He is extremely well muscled.
Hearing the first two men drop, the man in front of Mrs. Lewis turned around to face Mr. Lewis. Mr. Lewis grabbed him by his shirt collar and groin, squeezing hard enough to rupture both testicles in the process and picked him up over his head and slammed him on the floor hard enough to fracture his clavicle.
The last assailant, released Mrs. Lewis and ran for the exit. Mr. Lewis did not pursue but did jump on the assailant at his feet.
Note: at this point I am not sure if this person should be referred to as an assailant or victim. Mr. Lewis jumped on to the prone victim and proceeded to punch him in the face and torso. Fracturing his skull and collapsing his sinuses, both orbital bones fractured, several ribs and his sternum. If I would have seen the x-rays of the victim without context, I would have said car crash, no safety belt or airbag.
Mr. Lewis was questioned and released at the scene, all evidence was gathered, the officers and state's attorney agreed that while Mr. Lewis could have technically stopped after slamming assailant three on the ground, any reasonable person could have assumed an ongoing threat to himself or his wife. The first two assailants suffered severe concussions, the third was in a coma for three weeks before passing away from his injuries, the fourth was not identified, nor would assailant one or two give up his identity.
Mr. Lewis claims that he has noticed he is being followed by strange vehicles, has received several phone calls where no one is on the line. On two occasions he has returned home from running errands with his family to find his front door open, and most recently, 09/18/2021, his dog, terrier mix age 4, white with brown spots, went missing and has not been found. Mr. Lewis believes this to be revenge for the death of one of his wife's assailants.
Upon investigation, the three known assailants :
William P. Cunningham WM 22- Currently awaiting trial on assault charges relating to this case and a felony driving under the influence charge. Current location Macon county jail.
Terrell M. Jones BM 24 - Currently incarcerated on parole violations stemming from this incident and a failure to report address change and a possession of weapons. He is remanded to Illinois Department of Corrections for no less than 4 years for his parole violations and that is with these assault charges pending.
David Skaggs WM 26 - Deceased due to injuries sustained during this assault on Mrs. Lewis. Unknown assailant BM early to mid-twenties, 5'10” - 6', slender build, wearing dark jeans, a blue hoodie and white sneakers. Unknown assailant jumped the fence to the north of the gas station and disappeared into the neighborhood.
Of the three known assailants, none of them have any known gang affiliations, all have extensive criminal histories, but none of it gang related. Skaggs ( deceased ) does have one brother ( working as a nurse in Utah), when contacted as next of kin, brother wanted nothing to do with burial or dealing with the affairs of Mr. Skaggs. One sister, who went missing and has been presumed dead since 2002, at the age of 12. Case has been closed since 2004, investigating officers were able to find no sign of her. She disappeared while walking home from school. Skaggs' mother passed away shortly after, Father was unknown. Mr. Lewis was advised at this point to continue being vigilant and to record any further strange or threatening occurrences and report them to me immediately. It is my opinion that these things are unrelated, unless something is happening here that I cannot see yet, there appears to be no connection.
